Unless the "brand new high definition version" includes some re-making akin to Ghost in the Shell 2.0, it does seem a particularly pointless inclusion.

I checked the Japanese Blu-ray release and II don't think that's the case, though like you guys I'm unsure on the reasons behind including the SD version. They did something equally strange in Asia when they re-released the film with digital and film transfers of the main feature.

this has moved back to November so it's closer to the also delayed live-action film.

And another update - had a look at the disc now and there is no SD version here, it's just a weird choice of words in the press release. The disc includes both Digital Data Tape & Telecine sourced transfers - just like the special editions they released in Asia on DVD - so I guess that's where they got confused on the press release. Also updated to confirm AV Specs. The disc is region free.
