2Entertain announced two further titles in this year's Classic Who release schedule. September 3rd will see the Jon Pertwee four-parter The Time Warrior hit the shelves, followed on the 24th by the season-spanning The Key To Time starring Tom Baker.

The Time Warrior was the first story of Doctor Who's eleventh season, first broadcast over the Christmas period in 1974, and saw the introduction of Elisabeth Sladen as one of the Doctor's most popular companions Sarah Jane Smith. The intrepid journalist becomes embroiled in the Doctor's adventures when she investigates strange goings-on at a local research centre. Before she knows it, she finds herself back in the middle ages and having to come to terms with not only the white haired chap who can travel through time and space, but an aggressive Sontaran called Linx and the aggressive medieval robber baron going by the name Irongron.

UPDATE - extras for this title have now been announced by the Restoration Team and are as follows:

  • Commentary with actress Elisabeth Sladen, producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks
  • Beginning the End (30'13) in which cast and crew talk about the making of this story, partially shot on location at Peckforton Castle. With actors Elisabeth Sladen, Donald Pelmear and Jeremy Bulloch, producer Barry Letts, script editor Terrance Dicks and designer Keith Cheetham. Narrated by Simon Ockenden.
  • Trails and Continuity (1' 08") - BBC1 trails and continuity, recreated from off-air home audio recordings.
  • CGI Effects - view the story with optional new video effects.
  • 1974 Doctor Who Annual - in Adobe pdf format for viewing on PC or Mac.
  • Photo Gallery
  • Coming Soon Trailer
  • Radio Times Listings - in pdf format
  • Easter Eggs

  • The Key To Time, first shown in 1978-9, has been one of the most eagerly-awaited Who releases so far (as well as one of the most rumoured!) Already available on Region One with an inferior picture quality and few extras, it now comes to Region Two with an extraordinary array of supplementary material. Spanning all six stories of the sixteenth season, the epic follows the attempt by the Fourth Doctor and his new companion, the imperious Time Lady Romana (Mary Tamm), in their quest to track down the six pieces of the eponymous key, a device of unimaginable power. Featuring amongst other delights Douglas Adams's debut script The Pirate Planet, a spoof of The Prisoner of Zenda in The Androids of Tara and the series's 100th story The Stones of Blood this release promises to be a highlight of the year.

I have the R1 release of "The Key to Time" and although the picture quality is adequate, it doesn't hold a patch on the restored R2 releases, so I may trade my R1 in later in the year for the (hopefully) spruced up R2 equivalent. I see my bank balance will take another knock with "The Time Warrior" (Hmm. seeing a theme here, could it be "Time" by any chance!) in September too, another favourite of mine with the introduction of Sarah Jane Smith, perhaps the Doctor's best assistant ever.

Presumably R1 copies will be inferior by definition, since a fair chunk of the original material would have been shot on PAL video? (And 1970s PAL video at that!)

AH, this is more like it, proper classic Who, not the rubbishy JNT stuff! Apparently Planet of Evil is due for later in the year as well.

Indeed, I can't wait for Planet of Evil. I haven't watched it in ages, so I'm about due for a bit of a "re-discovery".

It's about time season 13 got some more love on DVD, it had some really great stories but Pyramids of Mars is the only one that's been released so far. Here's hoping it marks the first (or second technically) of many more season 13 releases to come! :D

    Happy Days!!!

I resisted The Key To Time for so long in the hope that a R2 set would be released, and now the wait is almost over. To have The Time Warrior released as well, only weeks apart from it, is Christmas come early as far as I am concerned.

Don't forget the other two 'time-titled' releases coming out in the next few months, Time-Flight and Timelash, which probably tie into the later half of the new series, more specifically

the "trap across time" that Russel T. Davies revealed in the Radio Times is set for the Doctor by a certain villainous someone,
as several of the previous Classic Who DVD releases have done over the past couple of years.

And speaking of Timelash, the Beeb just this minute revealed the coverart:

The Key To Time itself unlocks a secret portal from Sunday the 23rd to Monday the 24th (which is the actual release date) so you can buy it a day early.
