Good news for classic cartoon fans from Warner Home Video

When Warner released censored copies of several Tom and Jerry cartoons on DVD, contrary to earlier promises, animation fans the world over were far from amused. Their anger grew further when, the same year, Warner released Volume 2 of The Looney Tunes Golden Collection, featuring several cartoons that were incorrectly encoded for interlaced playback or subjected to invasive DVNR.

Now, at last, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. At a recent Home Theater Forum chat, a Warner representative made this statement:

"We will advise consumers who purchased Tom and jerry Spotlight Collection: Vol 2 on a disc replacement program how to exchange and replace their discs at no charge to them [...] We hope to have a similar announcement shortly regarding Tom and Jerry Vol 1."

A glance at Home Theater Forum's transcript for the chat reveals that Warner will also be establishing a similar replacement programme for Disc 4 of The Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume 2, which contained the interlaced-encoded cartoons. (Unfortunatedly, it doesn't look like the DVNR'd cartoons will be corrected.) Additionally, Warner are looking into the possibility of releasing some of the more controversial war-time cartoons such as Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips and Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs, which have been out of circulation for decades, at some point in the future.

Of course, given Warner's earlier broken promises regarding the censorship status of the first Tom and Jerry volume, this is very much a case of "believe it when you see it", but the fact that they are finally taking these issues seriously is heartening. And it sounds as if we might finally get legitimate DVD releases of the infamous "Censored 11" at some point in our lifetimes...

This is good news IF it turns out to be true. Does this mean if they ever get released in the UK they will be uncut?

Jah, please forgive my unexplained two week absence. To make it up to
you we will go out to dinner at a sensibly-priced restaurant, then have
a night of efficient German sex.

I'd be surprised if Warner would reissue the Tom & Jerry cartoons in the UK so soon, given how recent their censored "Classic Collection" series is.

All nice and dandy ... but somehow I doubt they'll be willing to replace copies sold to people overseas (and sending it back to the site I bought it from to get a replacement would be pretty risky, not that I don't trust them, but things tend to get lost in the mail all too often :( )

While they're at it maybe they could give the rest of the T&J shorts the same treatment as the first 6 ones on the 2nd volume ? Somehow I doubt that's gonna happen ... so I doubt I'll be going through any kind of trouble just to get a few soundtracks fixed. Don't get me wrong, I don't approve of the censoring, but sending something halfway round the world not knowing whether or not you'll ever see an actual replacement ... no thanks.

I might consider the LT disc ... as the interlacing was pretty annoying.
