Nathan Barley - a disappointment?

The first episode of Brass Eye, The Day Today and Jam creator Chris Morris' new show, Nathan Barley aired on Channel 4 on Friday, to a decidedly mixed response and, as always seems to be the case whenever a new Morris show appears (an all too rare occurence), many are already pondering whether he has "lost it".
Nathan Barley, for those who are not aware, is one of many characters feature on Guardian columnist Charlie Brooker's extremely witty television schedule parody TV Go Home (which recently was inexplicably replaced by advertisements for anti-spam technology): a "fuck-haired swaggering cock-about-town" who appears in a weekly fly-on-the-wall documentary series called "Cunt". I was, of course, elated to hear that Morris and Brooker, who previously worked together on the riotously funny and hard-hitting Brass Eye paedophilia special, were teaming up once again to bring this character to the screen, but I can't help thinking, having seen the first episode, that the end result is a bit of a let-down. Of course, it would be unfair to condemn the show on the basis of a single episode, but if the format of the rest of the series is the same as this then it seems like a serious step down for Morris. Although a very well-observed parody of London media types, it seems mildly chuckle-worthy rather laugh-out-loud hilarious. In fact, much of the time I got the impression that I was chuckling because I felt I was expected to rather than because I was actually amused.
Perhaps the main problem is that the subject matter is too narrow to appeal to a wide audience, or perhaps it has something to do with the fact that targets are too obvious. Or maybe it's due to the fact that Chris Morris is consigned to be forever known as the man behind The Day Today and Brass Eye, and as a result any future projects in which he is involved will be compared to them and judged on the merits of how like or unlike they are.

Either way, many Morris fans (the rabid ones) were disappointed the moment it was announced that his next project was a sitcom, as though expecting him to churn out Brass Eye and Jam for the rest of his life. The problem with Nathan Barley is that it seems about five years out of date already, but then it could be argued that such comments are also true of the London Meeja types that it lampoons.

I liked him more than the brother and sister characters who we're supposed to empathise with. He's supposed to be some serious journalist or something but what's he doing at Sugar Ape magazine in the first place writing inane lifestyle pieces? And how can you not laugh at an earnest young documentarian making a film about a choir of junkies? Or is this subtler satire? I don't know.
I did like a lot of the stuff around the sidelines, like Nathan's little bike and the Weekend Today obsession with supermarket wine and all the games at the Sugar Ape office. The Wasp T12 poster campaign they're advertising the show with is brilliant (I was taken in at first) and Nathan's web "portal" is also a spot-on parody of stupid websites.

Woah, woah, woah!! Stop!
Peter Kay's work "shite"? It's a darn sight better than a lot of other sitcoms around. If we're talking about disappointments, we might as well throw Ch. 5's "saviour" Joey into the ring - I'm sure Nathan Barley's better than that, though...

Believe me, it is. I accidentally saw an episode of Joey this weekend. That's half an hour of my life I want back. (Then again, I loathe and despise Friends, so maybe I shouldn't have been surprised.)

Still undecided about Nathan Barley-on one hand,it's great to have Morris back on TV,But this is far from his best work-he's definitely a better writer than director,at least for this sort of material.
Wish Channel 4 would let Victor Lewis-Smith make another series of TV Offal-that was quality :D

Why can't Morris do an update of the Day Today? It might be an Alan Partridge 2nd series (ie not as good as the first) but at least it would be something to watch...
Morris was interviewed a while back and said that he wouldn't do another The Day Today/Brass Eye styled show because he feels the formula has been expended. Everyone knows about it and gets the joke. I get the impression he derives a serious amount of enjoyment from baffling the hell out of viewers... which is exactly what Nathan Barley is doing, although it is definitely growing on me. I laughed out loud several times during last night's episode.

Morris strikes me as the kind of creative talent that never goes back - only forward.
Sometimes we keep up - sometimes he loses us for a while...but we get there eventually.
