Universal UK Blu-ray Coming Soon - Big Update

Universal Pictures have several UK Blu-ray Disc titles due to arrive over the coming months though firm release dates are currently hard to come by. Recently however that has started to change, with a more accurate schedule emerging...
20th October 2008: Leatherheads.
27th October 2008: Step Up, Step Up 2 The Streets.
24th November 2008: American Gangster, Casino, Miami Vice.
1st December 2008: The 40-Year-Old Virgin, The Kingdom, Knocked Up, Land of the Dead, The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, Rise: Blood Hunter, The Scorpion King, The Thing.
Region coding is TBC, though none of the sleeves on the titles we have specs for carry any region code icons suggesting these will be region all. In fact, some of these titles (Leatherheads, Step Up 2 The Streets and Land of the Dead for example) look to be the US discs in UK packaging.
All dates are subject to change. Specs follow for most titles…

Looking forward to 'Land of the Dead' and 'The Thing' !
There is a triple pack doing the rounds that is due out on 30/09, but I dont know if that is going to be region free or not. It also contains the Zack Snyder remake of the 'Dawn of the Dead'. Excellent triple pack if you ask me !

The Thing looks interesting - are we getting those extras including documentary that were on the HD-DVD but absent from the US BD disc?

I've read good things about The Thing picture quality. A definite purchase.

That'll be something if we get *all* the extras for The Thing over here. From the looks of it, they've already had to upgrade to a BD-50 to add in three extra soundtrack languages (which doubtless wouldn't have fit on a BD-25) - so possibly they've decided that, given the extra space, they can also leave all the extras intact?

The documentary and other extras are listed as 'Additional Features' (separate to the U-Control feature) so I'd say it's a good bet they're all included.

Updated with revised dates for most titles, including The Thing which now looks set for December. American Gangster specs added along with another tentative date. As is noted in the main piece, these dates are subject to change.

So does that mean the Mummy movies are the theatrical versions and not the unedited dvd versions?

Puts on investigating shoes...The Mummy was cut to get a 12 cert, this is a 15 cert, same as the unedited DVD release. In April this year a new 124m 53s version of the film was passed for video, without edits (presumably they used this version on the HD DVD as well). I suspect that's the version you'll see on Blu-ray.
The Mummy Returns is harder to say, as both cuts are a 12 cert. They did just recently pass a longer version of the film for video in September though, which is likely the version they'll use on Blu-ray (129m 38s).

Nice to see Universal have started doing away with those awful banners on the cover sleeve. I know they're still there, but these are better then the HD DVD banners.

Was the previous HD-DVD release of The Mummy Returns cut or uncut? If it was uncut I would at least suspect the BD to be as well...

Another update, more titles added, more artwork, more specs. Still no director's edition of Miami Vice.

A spanish review of The Thing - European BD
http://www.zonadvd.com/modules.php?name=Reviews&rop=showcontent&id=864
Main points are you DO get the Documentary in full as well as everything that was on the R1 2004 DVD version.
Also looks like we may get a mastered for Europe copy of the film as the USA BD file of the film only was 21.3GB whereas the European version is 23GB.
Only time and a DVDTimes review will tell......
