Wait...does this mean seasons 2-5 are ALREADY OUT?
Then why did they just (re-?)release the first one on DVD?
I'm terribly confused...

I believe they were first released (by HBO) only through Time Life online (so only to US and Canada residents). They then re-released the first one on general release (without the fifth bonus disc) - which annoyed some, I think - and now they are releasing the complete set (WITH bonus discs) in one package, possibly to appease those who didn't (couldn't?) get it through Time Life. I could be wrong on some of my points, but I'm fairly sure this is what has happened.

The S1 boxset was timed to tie into the new film, I guess for people wanting to see the original. At the time it was rumoured that the full boxset would also come out for Christmas so if you wanted the lot better to wait.

They ripped of US customers as you say because the R1 standalone set missed the extras unlike the R2.
However in both cases it was heavily rumoured the boxset was coming for Christmas.
Like Man from Uncle Warner gave their own US only mail order business Time Life a 1 year exclusive window so now they can go on general sale.
