IFA Consumer Electronics Show

At IFA 2008, Sony Europe announced the BDP-S5000ES, positioned at the high end of the company's lineup of players. The player features premium build quality and components as well as several unique Sony technologies, which together are "designed to take [the Full HD] audio and video experience to the limit".

Although the appeal of the "HD Reality Enhancer" option is perhaps questionable (its features include selective sharpening and film grain reduction!), another promised enhancement is "Super Bit Mapping", which uses noise-shaping to enhance the 8-bit colour signal from the Blu-ray Disc to the equivalent of a 14-bit signal. On the audio side, the player naturally supports the High Def audio codecs, and includes superior components to ensure high quality sound output, regardless of Digital or Analogue connections.

Standard-def DVD content will also be handled by the Precision Cinema HD Upscale processing, which promises high quality Film Cadence detection and Diagonal Interpolation for the smoothing of video jaggies.

This looks very nice but I suspect it will be at least £1000. The special features seem to be gimmicks as well that could take away from the picture rather than add to it.

I still think in terms of performance, easy of upgrade, and the fact that it plays games as well the PS3 is the best BD player still. If you have an non-HDMI reciever though this would be tempting. However when you think about it really you could get a PS3 and an HDMI reciever for less than a £1000.

Do these premium models always have to be so big?

One of the reason it's so big is because each of the components are separate. In theory, that means higher quality.

America only it seems for this player.....

The nearest we are going to get to this is the S550 which come out next week and should be only £300 (as long as you don't buy it in a Sony shop).

So eventually the UK gets a Sony Profile 2.0 BD Player......

Maybe Europe but as far as Sony UK's Head Office at Brooklands and their main customer service 0870 line there are currently no plans to release it in the UK.

BUT neither could explain either why Sony Europe was launching what they said was an American player at a European event.....?????? but they were both adament it was an American player.

Good 'ole Sony no idea as ever.......
