Paramount Home Entertainment have announced the US Blu-ray Disc release of The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration on 23rd September 2008 priced at $119.99 SRP. Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather and The Godfather Part II debut on Blu-ray Disc following meticulous restoration by Paramount Pictures, overseen by Coppola himself. The two fully restored films arrive along with a newly remastered version of The Godfather Part III, to be included as part of The Godfather, The Coppola Restoration Collection. All three films will be available only as part of a four-disc Blu-ray Disc collection complete with all bonus material from the original DVD collection alongside all-new extras.
The Godfather and The Godfather, Part II underwent extensive frame-by-frame examination and restoration utilizing state-of-the-art digital technology in this historic preservation effort, which required more than a year to complete. Robert A. Harris of the Film Preserve supervised the restoration under the direction of Coppola and cinematographer, Gordon Willis. Harris’ restoration credits include Lawrence of Arabia, Spartacus, Vertigo and Rear Window among others.
The new special features created by Kim Aubry, founder of Zoetrope Aubry Productions, explores the complexities of the restoration process and provides new insights and perspectives about how the film almost didn’t come to pass as we know it. “The Masterpiece That Almost Wasn’t” relates the unlikely events, intrigue, allegiances and luck that put together the unknown director with the “unwanted” cast and contains interviews with most of the living players and many of the films’ admirers. Other featurettes include “…when the shooting stopped,” and “Godfather World,” which take a look at The Godfather’s influence on popular culture today. Each film includes a commentary by Coppola.

All three films are presented in 1080p high definition with English 5.1 Dolby TrueHD, French 5.1 Dolby Digital, Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital and English Mono (except The Godfather: Part III) and English, English SDH, French, Spanish and Portuguese subtitles. The following special features are presented in high definition as noted:

I hope this isn't region coded. I can't wait to get my hands on this.

Or for a simultaneous or swift UK release.

$119.99?
Definitely worth waiting for a UK release.

Paramount Blu-rays aren't region coded (so far). It seems to be their studio policy.

As far as I'm aware, Paramount and Warner actually opposed region coding as part of the BD spec, but were overrulled.

Wait a minute - you're saying you think the UK RRP is going to be cheaper? :D

At that price I'll stick with my 18 quid DVD set which looks excellent upscaled.

Interesting. Why continue to use it on their DVDs, I wonder then.

You cannot compare DVD with HD, they're two different technologies. Granted the jump from VHS to DVD was larger but I bet you would pay the difference for DVD.
Besides $119.99 is only an RRP, it means largely nothing at all and will likely translate to about £40. Which is a fair price for a Blu-ray box set.

This would be a completely new presentation restored under the supervision of Robert Harris. Some of the preliminary shots released elsewhere show dramatic differences in tems of detail and color-scheme.

It swims, it eats and it makes little sharks!

Oh, you beat me to it!
But you are essentially correct, that IS what normally happens
------
You catch a shark, cut off its fins and tail, throw it back into the water ALIVE, but now unable to swim - so it slowly drowns - only to dry then boil those fins down to make a tasteless watery broth that costs the earth and is nothing more than a status symbol.
Ignorance personified.

It's the new DVD versions I have with the same restorations by Robert Harris. Looks great upscaled compared with the previous DVD release although I'm sure the blu-ray will look even better still. It's whether its worth paying the much higher price to get the new blu-ray over the new DVD. I'll be reading the reviews of the picture and sound quality of the blu-ray with interest.

Looks like you'd definately be hit with import tax! Unless you wait until the New Year as I've heard the allowance is going to be raised to about £130

Apart from the obvious audio/visual improvements the best thing about the BR version is no more f*cking Godfather 2 disc flips!
I am an agent of chaos!

Amazon show it as $86.95 at the moment. That may change, but that price is guaranteed on pre-orders.

The new DVD isn't split either.

Yeah on the new box set. Disc 4-5 make up the extras, with disc 5 having the new ones.
