I liked Miami VIce and will be picking that one up.

Although, everytime I hear of Universal releasing Blu-Rays, I always think "Where's The Thing?"

Oh dear, Indeed! And yes, where is The Thing? These are titles that if I owned them on DVD I wouldn't bother to upgrade them. Very poor, Universal need to pick up there game. ))-:

End Of Days (ahem, got it free at Amazon......) looks fantastic in hi-def. Extras have been severely stripped down compared to the hd-dvd version though.

U-571
is it correct that the EiV BD UK disc is 1080i?
and that it is in a 1.85:1 ratio??

Can't find any reviews of it even though it was released sept 2007?

Out of all of the above films, I would pick Miami Vice. Good call on The Thing by the way. I'd love that film on BD.

Does anyone have the HD-DVD version and if so, how good is the film in high def considering its age now ?

I had a feeling Miami Vice would only be the DC. I'll stick with my HD-DVD Combo. The only major advantage is Lossy Full-rate DD Plus vs. Lossless DTS-HD MA.

I bet American Gangster will also only have the Theatrical Cut too, in this case it's also the Director's Cut. That will be a pity as I'd like to see The Extended Cut in HD. At least you can always buy the UK HD-DVD to get the Miami Vice: Theatrical Cut.

The correct aspect ratio is 2.35:1. Which the USA Universal HD-DVD and DVD are but EIV have always released it in an open matt 1.78:1 aspect ratio, the BD carries this on. It looks like the Japanese BD is also 1.78:1.

Finding reviews of EIV BDs is mission impossible, often because they're so rubbish no wants to buy them :D.

Re: The Thing - Excellent. There are comparison captures on the web somewhere. It's a definite improvement over DVD, obviously don't expect it to look like a film made in 2008.

Any word when Universal will start releasing titles in EU/UK? On HD-DVD they stripped the lossless tracks and replaced them with about every DD+ dub available. Hope they wont do the same on BD.

They only did that on two releases I know of. The HD-DVDs had DD+ and TrueHD, seeing as these have only DTS-HD MA I can't seeing that happening again.

More BS from Universal! But that's okay, since they are quite possibly the worst major studio this century!

Bar, The Fast and Furious series, of course!

Many would disagree. Universal much more so than any other studio were responsible for creating the mammoth HD-DVD catalogue we have today, which led hundreds of not thousands of people getting into HD cheaply.

But then I wouldn't expect a BD fanboy to have any love for them ;).

Compare with Fox Universal are already proving they'll be a decent Blu-ray label.

"worst studio of the century" - ET, Jaws, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, Gladiator, Pscycho, Schindler's List, Casino, Doom. No, the last one was a joke. ;)

That's mostly last century, and quite honestly apart from Psycho, I am interested in absolutely ZERO of those titles!

Vertigo, Duel or Columbo (which wouldn't be that great in Hi-Def anyway) maybe. But other than mostly Hitchcock action and a few TV shows, nothing much for me.

Universal owns the pre-1950 Paramount catalogue, which is no slouch (early Marx Brothers, Marlene Dietrich, Billy Wilder, Cecil B. DeMille...).

I didn't say I hate them, I said they are quite probably the worst studio this century! Of course all majors have their moments, but lately Universal have been the pits.

But while in addition of not personally liking their library catalog all that much: It gives me just a little satisfaction of knowing that they are also near or joint near the bottom of Box Office takings this century!! ;)

Why wouldn't they be that great? They're coming from a 35mm source as most American TV shows still do.
