The BBC have sent through the details on their March 2004 Region 2 DVD line-up that includes the oft-delayed release of Blakes 7: Series 1 now 'officially confirmed' to be arriving on 1st March 2004. Also delayed from its previous January 12th release date is the comedy series Wild West that will now debut on 15th March.

Full details on all March DVD releases follow...

Doctor Who: Pyramids of Mars - £19.99 - The future of the cosmos is at stake when the Doctor faces his most fearsome adversary in this four part adventure. Returning to UNIT HQ on Earth, the TARDIS is thrown violently about by a mysterious force and Sarah and the Doctor arrive instead at an old priory in the year 1911. The owner, Marcus Scarman, has been excavating ancient tombs and is possessed by the spirit of Sutekh, bringer of "the gift of death to all mankind". Sutekh has lain for thousands of years in his pyramid prison and Scarman and his robot mummies plan to release this ancient and evil power. Will Sutekh the all-powerful be freed from his bonds and destroy the world, or will the Doctor manage to bring about his destruction?

Special features on the DVD include:
  • Audio Commentary with actors Elisabeth Sladen and Michael Sheard, producer Philip Hinchcliffe and contributions from director Paddy Russell
  • Osirian Gothic - cast and crew recall the story's production
  • Now & Then - comparing and contrasting the Stargrove location as it was during filmmaking in 1975 to how it is today
  • Deleted and Extended scenes
  • Serial Thrillers - in-depth look at the three years in which Philip Hinchcliffe produced the series, featuring contributions from writers, actors, directors and fans, as well as Hinchcliffe himself
  • Oh Mummy - a spoof look at Sutekh's career post-'Pyramids'
  • Picture Gallery
  • Easter Egg
  • Production Notes

Michael Palin: Pole to Pole - £19.99 - Michael Palin's second challenge is to travel from the North to the South Pole, by land and sea. The crossing is varied and frequently gruelling, passing through Russia days before the abortive Gorbachev coup, then on through Turkey, Egypt, Sudan and South Africa, hopefully arriving in time to catch the only ship from Africa to Antarctica. Extras include an interview with Michael Palin.

The Best of Monty Python's Flying Circus DVD Box Set - £29.99 - Contains The Best of Monty Python's Flying Circus - Volumes 1, 2 & 3 and the Live At Aspen show. Extras include previously unseen footage from the 1999 Monty Python night including It's The Monty Python Story, Pythonland, and From Spam to Sperm.

    8th March 2004:

The Singing Detective (1986) - £19.99 - From one of the great experimentalists of TV drama comes a compellingly original tour-de-force which mingles fantasy and reality with haunting hit songs of the 1940's. The award-winning The Singing Detective, acclaimed as Dennis Potter's masterpiece, is a dazzlingly entertaining and multi-layered mystery thriller with a distinguished cast.

Wracked by a terrible skin disease, the unsuccessful writer Phillip Marlow (Michael Gambon) looks cynically back on life from his bed in a busy National Health hospital, fantasising himself into one of his own pulp thrillers as a crooning '40's detective enmeshed in a baffling murder case. But memories of his wartime childhood keep intruding – as do songs like 'Blues in the Night', 'Dry Bones' and 'Cruising Down The River'. Unwillingly, Marlow agrees to talk to a psychotherapist – and, slowly, the clues begin to add up. But to what?

This three-disc set includes excerpts from a 1998 documentary called "Close up: Dennis Potter under the skin", an "Arena" segment, two "Points of View" segments, cast filmographies and a fascinating commentary with Producer Kenith Trodd and Director Jon Amiel.

Ultimate Delia - £34.99 - This easy-to-use interactive cookery book is the first Delia release on DVD, combining the best recipes from Delia Smith's popular television series and the accompanying best-selling book collections - Summer, Winter, Christmas and How to Cook. The 134 easy-to-follow recipes on this DVD all come complete with their own television clip and are divided into four discs. Each disc covers a particular group of recipes: dinner parties, traditional favourites, family meals and party ideas - making this the definitive DVD guide to cooking.

Extras include printable recipes and a booklet containing an index of all 134 recipes.

The Big Dinosaur Box - £29.99 - Includes the previously released Walking With Dinosaurs and The Ballad of Big Al along with two never before seen specials on a fourth disc...

Land of the Giant Dinosaurs - In a time when monstrous creatures ruled the earth, South America was the land of the giants. Recent evidence has revolutionised our ideas about what was big in the age of dinosaurs and to help us gauge a sense of the enormity of this world, we are led by a presenter (Nigel Marven) who walks among these gigantic creatures, interacting with them as he searches to fulfil his ambition - to witness the largest predator bringing down the largest prey.

The Giant Claw - This DVD brings to life one of the most bizarre creatures ever to walk the earth. Our presenter journeys back to the sand dunes of the Mesozoic Mongolia to track the owner of the largest claws of all time - Therizinosaurus. His adventure yields a series of vital and surprising clues - a nest, footprints, dung and a skeleton with a toothless skull. Eventually he is rewarded by a face-to-face encounter with the owner of the giant claw but until then he must negotiate vast nesting sites, see of curious Velociraptors and avoid the terrifying Tarbosaurus.

Extras include an Interview with Tim Haines, Jasper James and Nigel Marven, fact files.

    15th March 2004:

Wild West - £19.99. This quirky comedy is set in the small, picturesque yet rather odd coastal village of St. Gweep and stars Dawn French. Mary (Dawn French) always says what she thinks and is not averse to stocking the shop she runs with stolen goods, while Angela's prim exterior masks an unhealthy obsession with some frilly frocks and strange phobias. And the village locals are every bit eccentric as the distinctively 'odd couple' in this charming and original series.

    29th March 2004:

Even More Great Comedy Moments - £15.99 - The third and final DVD in the 'Great Comedy Moments' trilogy brings us up to date with moments from several of the most recent award winning comedy series including The Office, I'm Alan Partridge, The League Of Gentleman, Only Fools And Horses, Shooting Stars, Absolutely Fabulous, Red Dwarf and more!

Is the information about commentary/extras on The Singing Detective confirmed? Compared to R1 the price of the UK edition seems to be suspiciously low.

So after months and months of waiting we're going to get Blakes 7 in a cardboard digipak! Maybe they should include an extra about how to make Blue Peter style packaging. If Warner finally woke up to the fact that many people are put off by shoddy packaging then why can't the BBC. I will get Pyramids and Pole to Pole. Maybe I will get Blakes 7 if I see it on sale for £19.99 or so!

Warner Bros haven't woken up to that fact yet.

They may have realised that Amaray cases are better than those cardboard ones (completely changing the style of the Friends releases in the last season) but they haven't given up on the lack of quality for their box sets, look at the last Babylon 5 set and the Smallville set if you don't believe me.

    You're quite correct J.O
I have bought the Australian 2-disc Alien films in Amarays rather than buy the horrible Quadrilogy boxset. I lose the ninth disc of extras but thats a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
I will also get either the R1 or R4 Alias when the price is right as they are 3 * double amaray in a strong cardboard sleeve. The R2 release is very Blue Peter!

About the singing detective. I'm more worried about the runtime listed on various sites. Many sites (eg Play, Splash) list the run time at 6 hours approx. The videos which I have watched are just over 6 and a half hours with credits at the end of each of the two tapes rather then at the end of each episode. hopefully the BBC can clear this up.
