Do Blu Ray players let you play normal DVDs? And do either of the next generation format players upscale DVDs?
Still not liking the stupid tagline at the bottom. Apart from having really bad English, it looks ridiculous too.

Yes, both play normal DVDs and upscale them too.

The running times match the theatrical prints, so 24fps.

If they re-use the same transfer as the US release, it should be the unrated cut.

But am I right in thinking this is achieved via good old 3:2 pulldown? As I understand it HD-DVD doesn't support true 24fps footage - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24p#24p_in_high_definition_disc_formats
Or am I missing something?

I honestly don't know. I should probably have said the running times match the theatrical prints/ntsc releases and left it at that. I know the Studio Canal HD DVDs are meant to be 1080/24 though.

So far it's looking good, even Jarhead has the full quota of extras (some of which never even made it onto the R2 DVD release). The only question mark is King Kong, which appears to be barebones. Though at this time we don't know the specific content of the US release either.

According to the HD DVD Format Blog, King Kong's US release will come with the "U-control" feature, which "will include Picture-In-Picture access to behind-the-scenes bonus materials..., among others. This announcement is currently applicable to the North American release of the HD DVD. The availability of this interactive feature on the HD DVD release due in other regions is yet to be confirmed." This was just announced today, so it may be that information regarding the UK release will turn up shortly.

Actually neither the Pioneer or the Sony can play CDs. I wouldn't consider it a dealbreaker, but it's odd to say the least.

I believe both formats store the video as 24p and the players do the PAL/NTSC output. Apparently players that do 24p out and displays that can accept that are coming, at least for Blu-ray

And yes, these HD DVDs seem to be 24p. The output will not be PAL or NTSC unless you're hooked up through Composite or S-Video, in which case the output will be NTSC (no PAL anywhere).

So does this mean the end of NTSC pulldown and PAL speed-up?

That's what I'm praying for.

I was able to speak with someone at Sony yesterday about this and they made an interesting point that I'm going to assume is accurate. Providing you have a player that outputs 1080/24 and a screen which accepts 1080/24 then you'll get a perfectly smooth image.
If however the player or screen only outputs or accepts 1080/60 (which is most common apparently with very few screens capable of 1080/24) then 3:2 pulldown will have to be performed.

Don't HD-DVDs have the ability to support more surround-tracks than regular DVD, without degrading the picture quality?
