Optimum Home Entertainment have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of The Ultimate Hammer Collection for 30th October 2006 priced at £149.99. From the vaults of the legendary Hammer production house come these 21 classic films, the cream of Hammer’s Horror, Science Fiction and Fantasy productions, featuring iconic performances from Vincent Price, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee among a host of others. This box-set also includes “The Nanny”, a Hammer classic never before seen on UK DVD starring the legendary Bette Davies.

The Films:

  • She
  • The Nanny
  • Dracula Prince of Darkness
  • The Plague of the Zombies
  • Rasputin the Mad Monk
  • The Reptile
  • The Witches
  • One Million Years B.C.
  • The Viking Queen
  • Frankenstein Created Woman
  • Quatermass and the Pit
  • The Vengeance of She
  • The Devil Rides Out
  • Prehistoric Women
  • Scars of Dracula
  • The Horror Frankenstein
  • Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb
  • Straight on Till Morning
  • Fear in the Night
  • Demons of the Mind
  • To The Devil A Daughter

The Extras: Included in the set are audio commentaries, trailers, interviews and the full-length documentary “To the Devil…the Death of Hammer”.

The box-set includes six audio commentaries, which include contributions from the following:

Roy Ward Baker – The veteran director made seven films for Hammer between 1967 and 1973, as well as an episode of the company’s television series Journey to the Unknown. He appears on the commentary for Scars of Dracula.

Christopher Lee – Although they were never a double act, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee are indelibly linked to the studio that made them international stars. Lee appears on the commentary for Scars of Dracula.

Jimmy Sangster – Writer, producer and director, Jimmy Sangster was one of the original architects of Hammer horror. He wrote The Curse of Frankenstein in 1957 and saw 15 subsequent scripts filmed by the company. He appears on the commentaries for The Nanny, The Horror of Frankenstein and Fear in the Night.

Peter Sykes – Peter Sykes’ relatively brief directing career included two Hammer films, both of which are featured in this box set. He appears on the commentary for Demons of the Mind and in the documentary that accompanies To The Devil A Daughter.

    WOW!

Looks like a stunningly designed set, with a superb selection of films. Although, I'm slightly disappointed to see that 'Dracula AD 1972' and 'The Satanic Rites of Dracula' didn't make it. I know they're cheesy, but they're still classics. The inclusion of 'The Nanny' makes up for it though....

First the R1 Superman 14-disc set, now this. I'm going to be broke by Xmas...

"This box-set also includes “The Nanny”, a Hammer classic never before seen on UK DVD starring the legendary Bette Davies."

This is incorrect, since it until recently was available in the UK on a double-feature DVD with non-Hammer film 'The Blue Lamp'. However, I expect this new release will be in the correct aspect ratio, seeing that the old release was 4:3 only.

And in which of these movies does Vincent Price appear...?!

I'm not sure Price is in any of them, is he?

That box looks ripe for destruction by Royal Mail, unfortunately. If it arrives with the box and all 21 discs intact it'll be a miracle.

So Optimum have acquired the Hammer titles which were on Warner and Network have the ones which were on Carlton? I wonder how the Hammer catalogue got split up in the first place?

Still the usual re-hash of Hammer epics, still no mention of STRANGLERS OF BOMBAY,TWO FACES OF DR.JEKYLL,THE GORGON,CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB,NEVER TAKE SWEETS FROM A STRANGER,TASTE OF FEAR,UGLY DUCKLING ,THE DAMMED,MANIAC and non-horror such as CAMP ON BLOOD ISLAND,
PIRATES OF BLOOD RIVER all originally released thru BLC/Columbia a few seen on tv but not in their original screen format it seems that the majority of national film companies don't give credit to some of the gems still rotting away in their vaults:(

The division of the Hammer catalogue is a long and complex tale. You have the Hammer films distributed by Universal and Warners, EMI and Rank, Columbia and United Artists. Some were distributed in the US by 20th Century Fox and, in one case, AIP.

In the UK, the EMI titles were sold to Cannon who then sold them to Weintraub who then got rid of them to Studio Canal, possibly via Warners but I'm not sure about the last step. Warners had the rights to the Canal catalogue until last year when Canal bought Optimum.

The Rank titles were part of the Carlton catalogue which has passed on to Network.

So is the documentary "To the Devil...the Death of Hammer" only available in the box-set or will it be available on one of the separate releases?

It's on the "To the Devil A Daughter" disc so if/when that's released separately it'll be there.

Ah thanks, I can't afford to splash out on the box-set so I'll get the separate releases over time as they come out.

I don't think that these films are neccisarily 'rotting away' in their vaults- different films are currently in license with different companies....all of these films aren't currently owned by Optimum for them to release.
