Optimum Home Entertainment have announced the UK Region 2 DVD release of The Third Man (Special Edition) for 25th September 2006 priced at £17.99. Set in a bombed-out, post-war Vienna, The Third Man stars Joseph Cotten as Holly Martins, a writer of pulp Westerns, who arrives penniless as guest of his childhood chum Harry Lime, only to find him dead. Martins develops the ultimate conspiracy theory after learning of a “third man” present at the time of Harry’s death, running into interference from investigating British officer Trevor Howard and falling head-over-heels for Harry’s grief-stricken lover, Alida Valli.

The version featured on the disc is the complete director’s cut, eleven minutes longer than the version shortened for American audiences by co-producer David O. Selznick, and featuring an opening narration by director Carol Reed himself (replaced by Cotten’s in the U.S. version).

The film is presented in 4:3 with English Mono sound. Extras include the 90 minute Shadowing the Third Man documentary, Third Man On The Radio: two US radio plays, original trailers and a featurette on Anton Karas (who provided the film’s score).

Also released on 25th September is a Graham Greene Collection bringing together films based upon his novels - The Third Man, Brighton Rock, Fallen Idol and Heart of the Matter. We’ll bring you full details on that soon.

Looks great! Love the over. I hope Optimum's Don't Look Now SE has as good a cover.

The previous R2 had a "wobbly" soundtrack that made the zither theme extremely irritating to listen to. The Criterion was OK though. Hope they get that fixed.

This version is going to have to go a long way to beat the R1 Criterion version, which is one of the best b+w transfers I've ever seen.

Haven't there been strong hints that Criterion have been working on a new edition?

Well I cannot see how Criterion could improve on their edition....it was almost perfect. Along with the 39 Steps, some of the best restoration jobs done.

Even though there is a feature-length documentary, it is still a discrace that there is no commentary by a Scholar.

I would think the documentary would suffice. Commentaries can be very useful but I prefer a good documentary - and some scholars are VERY dry...

There's a bit of speculation, but no actual word from Criterion itself that I'm aware of. The rumours are based on an apparently reliable website that lists Criterion's The Third Man as having being discontinued alongside a number of others that were already known to be on the slate for a rerelease.

If this is just a UPC renumbering (as has happened before with Traffic) or signs of a new edition is unsure, though Criterion do tend to announce in advance where possible if they're taking an edition out of print.

The Criterion version doesn't have a commentary and the extras on the R2 certainly are superior. Why all the whingeing?
