Warner Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Blade Runner: The Director's Cut for 12th September 2006 priced at $19.97 SRP. Director Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner -- starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos and Daryl Hannah -- made its first appearance in U.S. theaters on June 25, 1982, dazzling audiences with its stylish, brooding look into the future. From its intelligent, provocative story line to its stunning camera work and state-of-the art special effects, Blade Runner opened the door to a new view of tomorrow.
Blade Runner: The Director's Cut has been restored and remastered, presented here in 2.40:1 Anamorphic Widescreen with English and French Dolby Surround audio and optional English, French and Spanish subtitles. There are no extras.
As previously outlined, this restored and remastered DVD version of the 1992 Director’s Cut will be available for a special four-month limited release, after which it will be placed on moratorium by WHV. Then later in 2007, to celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary, the studio will unveil Blade Runner: The Final Cut, Scott’s definitive new version of his science-fiction masterpiece. The film will be released theatrically in select major U.S. cities, followed by a multi-disc Special Edition DVD release which will also contain three alternate versions of Blade Runner: the Original U.S. Theatrical Cut, the Expanded International Theatrical Cut and the 1992 Director’s Cut. Ample, ground-breaking bonus features will also be included.

at least they tell us that they'll be releasing such a 25th anniversary edition with three cuts, extras etc etc. I'll wait then. And all those who can't wait have the option to buy one of the limited R1 DVDs.

How exactly is it a rip-off? This title is being offered at a reasonable price and you already know the other editions are planned for 2007 before this one is even being released. You can make an informed choice now, which is more than can be said for certain other multiple released titles. I really don't see your point.

After all not everyone buys dvds for the extras, so why should they have to buy huge expensive sets when all they want is the movie itself.
At least Warner have announced the extended cuts and not kept them secret like some studios we could mention.
So hats off to Warners (for once) for being up front and honest about the release schedule.
Other studios please take note...

Still I can't wait to see how it looks. The DC should really be renamed considering come this DVD release it will be completely inaccurate to call it such, not to mention confusing to say the least.
Is the Final Cut getting an international theatrical run? I really hope so.

The Warner catalogue has remarkably few "extended" and "director's" cuts - in fact I can't really think of any without going to look through my DVD collection. Of course they've had their share of double-dips over the years, but nearly always with a much-improved transfer and/or substantial new extras.
I don't think they treat new releases quite as well as their extensive back-catalogue, but personally I don't really mind that - it's much more interesting to re-assess a film when it's been around for a few years.
As regards treating their customers as if they're actually valued and respected, Warner are light-years ahead of all the other major studios.
Seth Cohen wannabe.

With the one exception of their British division's TV department whose purpose in life seems to be to pointlessly mistreat releases.
