Paramount Home Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of The Dead Zone (Special Collector's Edition) and Pet Sematary (Special Collector's Edition) for 26th September 2006 priced at $14.99 SRP each. These two early Stephen King feature film adaptations arrive in new special edition versions and will also be available as part of a Stephen King Collection four-disc set bundled together with the existing editions of Graveyard Shift and Silver Bullet.

The Dead Zone - The Stephen King novel comes to life under the directorial hand of David Cronenberg. Christopher Walken wakes from a coma due to a car accident, only to find he has lost five years of his life, and yet gained psychic powers. Foreseeing the future appears to be a ‘gift’ at first, but ends up causing problems.

Features include:
  • Anamorphic Widescreen
  • English DD2.0 & DD5.1 Surround
  • French Mono
  • English Subtitles
  • Featurettes include all new interviews with Director David Cronenberg, Actress Brooke Adams, Author/Critic/Biographer Douglas E. Winter, Director of Photography Mark Irwin, and Editor Ronald Sanders
  • Memories From The Dead Zone
  • The Look of The Dead Zone
  • Visions and Horror From The Dead Zone
  • The Politics of The Dead Zone
  • Theatrical Trailer

Pet Sematary - Dr. Louis Creed just moved to Maine with his wife and two children when he finds his daughter's beloved cat has been hit by a truck and killed. Thankfully, a strange, elderly neighbour named Jud knows a secret that may spare the young girl’s tears. He takes the dead cat to an ancient Indian burial ground that lies hidden in the surrounding hilltops. When he buries the feline there, it comes back to life a few days later. But Louis can't be trusted with the secret, and despite strong warnings that something horrible will happen, he uses the power of the burial ground to bring his son back from the dead -- after the child is killed the same way the family cat was.

Features include:
  • Anamorphic Widescreen
  • English DD2.0 & DD5.1 Surround
  • French DD2.0 Surround
  • English subtitles
  • Commentary by Director Mary Lambert
  • Stephen King's Pet Sematary: Stephen King Territory
  • Stephen King's Pet Sematary: The Characters
  • Stephen King's Pet Sematary: The Making of the Film
  • Featurettes include all new interviews with Director Mary Lambert, Author, Critic, Biographer Douglas E. Winter Actors Dale Midkiff and Brad Greenquist, and Director of Photography Peter Stein

Can't say I like the covers, and shame they're putting prominence on the writer rather than the director (particularly in the case of The Dead Zone, which is very much Cronenberg's rather than Steven King's, or at least as equal).

Wouldn't give houseroom to the others but The Dead Zone is great. I just wonder how 'special' the special edition will be. It's a term that seems to be applied a little loosely these days... ;)

Agree about the cover art. Not exactly subtle is it?

For $14.99 and coming from Paramount, I wouldn't expect much.

Here are the extras....

The Dead Zone: Collector's Edition will include the featurettes "Memories from 'The Dead Zone,'" "The Look of 'The Dead Zone,'" "Visions from 'The Dead Zone'" and "The Politics of 'The Dead Zone.'" All include new interviews with director David Cronenberg, actress Brooke Adams, cinematographer Mark Irwin, editor Ronald Sanders and King biographer Douglas E. Winter.

Looks like I may have to suffer owning two copies of this DVD as my R2 Santuary Edition would offer unique extras over this SE.

New interviews, I'm impressed. I retract my sarky comments, apologies to Paramount.

No Cronenberg commentary?! WTF? He's always up for those.

Paramount can go to hell and I'll stick with my Sanctuary disc w/ the great Kim Newman/Stephen Jones. commentary.
