Universal Studios Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Double Indemnity (Special Edition) for 29th August 2006 priced at $26.98 SRP. Directed by six-time Academy Award® winner Billy Wilder (Sunset Boulevard) and starring Hollywood legends Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson, Double Indemnity tells a chilling tale of lust, murder and deception. This quintessential film noir was nominated for seven Oscars® including Best Picture and Best Actress. Wilder and hard-boiled crime novelist Raymond Chandler wrote the script based on James M. Cain’s novella about a pair of amoral opportunists, obsessed with each other and planning the “perfect crime.” Featuring cinematographer John Seitz’s exquisite black and white settings, Double Indemnity was named one of the Top 100 Films in history by the American Film Institute.

Double Indemnity is the fourth release in the Universal Legacy Series of films. The digitally remastered print is available for the first time in this specially packaged two-disc set, which also includes all new bonus material.

Features include:
  • 1.33:1 Full Frame
  • English & Spanish DD2.0 Mono
  • English SDH, French & Spanish subtitles
  • Introduction by Robert Osborne
  • Shadows of Suspense
  • Audio Commentary with Film Historian Richard Schickel
  • Audio Commentary with Film Historian/Screenwriter Lem Dobbs and Film Historian Nick Redman
  • Original Theatrical Trailer
  • Double Indemnity 1973 TV Movie

Shame they bothered to release the barebones R2 when this must already have been in the works. Looking forward to it though!

Depending on the special features, this should be a certain purchase for me. Superb film.

Nice to see Universal are now using two-discs instead of their notoriously un-reliable DVD-18s

Oh no! The TV movie remake as an extra is so off-putting.

Yes, the television version is truly awful. Shame the companies don't give us one of their 'B' movies in the same genre (Among the Living in this case, for instance) when other extras are hard to find. Whatever, if the print is good this is a masterpiece and a must.

Schickel did however write the rather good BFI Classics book on DOUBLE INDEMNITY - If push comes to shove he can sit there and read it frankly - it's a pretty good read.

And yeah, its a rotten cover - looks like BONNIE AND CLYDE!

Is it just me or does Stanwyck's picture on the cover remind anyone of Peggy Cummins in Gun Crazy

Schickel's commentary should be good. He knows his stuff, even if he's not the most scintillating speaker in the world.

The TV remake is indeed pretty dire but it does have Lee J. Cobb to commend it and I'll watch him in anything.
