Fox Home Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of The Sound of Music 40th Anniversary Edition for 15th November 2005 priced at $26.98 SRP. The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world's most beloved musical starring Julie Andrews. The 2-disc 40th Anniversary Edition DVD brings together the entire cast for the first time in twenty years to mark this important celebration with new memories of the making of this timeless family classic.

Julie Andrews serves as host of the 40th Anniversary Edition DVD, which features several hours of all-new documentary material created especially for this milestone, presented by arrangement with The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, and produced by Emmy Award nominee Michael Kantor (PBS' "Broadway: The American Musical"). Viewers are taken from the Hollywood Hills to the Austrian Alps and along the way will get to hear the fascinating story behind "THE SOUND OF MUSIC," as told by Julie Andrews and others; drop in on a warmhearted chat between Andrews and Plummer; travel back to Salzburg with Charmian Carr (Liesl) to revisit the movie's locales; join all seven of the children in a boisterous family reunion; and even tag along to an unforgettable "sing-a-long" Sound of Music at the Hollywood Bowl.

Disc one of the set offers two ways to view the film -- the fully restored original theatrical feature and a brand new interactive version with a Sing-Along function allowing viewers to watch, listen and sing-along, based on the wildly popular internationally touring show. Disc two is fully loaded with several hours of all-new special features and bonus materials.

Disc 1:

  • Original Theatrical Feature
  • 2.20:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
  • English DD4.0 & DD5.1 Surround
  • French Dolby Surround
  • Spanish Mono
  • English, French and Spanish subtitles
  • Separate chapter list for songs only with Play all feature
  • Isolated Score
  • Commentary by Robert Wise

  • All-new -- A special anniversary introduction by Julie Andrews
  • All-new -- Commentary with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer
  • All-new -- English, French and Spanish Sing-a-long subtitles

    Disc 2:

  • -- All-new -- "My Favorite Things: Julie Andrews Remembers" -- Julie Andrews recalls the von Trapp family, and how their true-life story became a Broadway triumph and a Hollywood legend; she is joined by Christopher Plummer, Johannes von Trapp, Charmian Carr, director Robert Wise and others, plus rarely-seen footage and a few surprises. (63mins)

  • -- All-new -- "Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer: A Reminiscence" -- They fell in love on screen 40 years ago, and have been dear friends ever since. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer sit down for an intimate fireside chat. (20mins)

  • -- All-new -- "On Location With The Sound Of Music" featurette -- Salzburg, Austria is one of the stars of the film, and in this travelogue, Charmian Carr takes us back to that magical city to revisit the locales made famous in the film. (23mins)

  • -- All-new -- From "Liesl To Gretl: A 40th Anniversary Reunion" -- 40 years ago they forged a bond that has never been broken; all seven of the von Trapp "children" reunite in this touching, hilarious and even revelatory family reunion. (34mins)

  • -- All-new -- "When You Know The Notes To Sing" -- You have to see it to believe it: 18,000 people at the Hollywood Bowl, singing with Julie, cheering the children and hissing the villains; the Sing-a-Long-Sound of Music phenomenon is a worldwide event, but no place does it quite like the Hollywood Bowl. And the winner of the highly coveted costume contest...? (13mins)

  • -- "The von Trapp Family: Harmony & Discord" -- This 1998 A&E Biography tells the true story of the von Trapp family, immortalized in "The Sound of Music." (50mins)

  • Lobby Cards and One Sheets
  • Screen Tests: Mia Farrow and Marni Nixon
  • Trailers & TV Spots (Theatrical Teaser; Theatrical Trailer; 1st Anniversary Trailer; Academy Award Trailer; 1973 Reissue Trailer; Testimonial Trailer; 30 Second TV Trailer; 60 Second TV Trailer)

Also available on November 15th are new Special Edition releases of State Fair and Oklahoma!

At least this has a lot of new material to make it worth getting. It had better have a new restored transfer though otherwise this release will be a wasted opportunity!
I don't know how other people feel but I think it's fantastic that some older stars like Julie Andrews are really embracing DVD and contributing a great deal to their 'classic' work.

Is it me or is Chris Plummer in EVERYTHING at the moment...

I mean... he plays Nic Cage's Dad in "NATIONAL TREASURE", Diane Lane's Dad in "MUST LOVE DOGS" and he's also in the new Colin Farrell movie epic "NEW WORLD" or whatever it's called.

I've always preferred the 1968 film "Star!" to this one. Same star and director, but thankfully no lederhosen....! Its just been released by Fox as part of their Studio Classics collection and I think has the same extras as the R1 so get that instead of this!! :D

not Fox's fault by any means, but nonethless highly predictable. any cover they create for this movie would have to be some variation of Julie Andrews twirling on the mountain...

Hopefully they'll do a better job with this transfer than they did for the previous edition.
