Great news! I bought the current release at Walmart a few months ago but never opened it. It's definitely going back.

I wouldn't hold your breath. It is Universal we're talking about after all. The current release (R1) has very good sound/image plus a good interview.

It had better be remastered, because the transfer on the old edition (assuming the R1 looks the same as the R2) is really showing its age.

This was one of the very first R1s I bought back in 1999. I'm planning on getting this re-release because a) it's one of my very favourite films and b) the picture on my R1 is quite poor.

They obviously liked the artwork from the R2 Coen Bros collection enough to re-use it for the R1!

That's poor! The making of is the only real extra of worth. Where's the commentaries? This is little more than a bare bones edition.

Totally disagree about picture quality on existing R1. If you're unhappy with that then I suspect you'll never be content.

I'll root it out and check it out again, perhaps I'm confusing it with some other R1 I bought at the same time in 1999. Starfish Troopers or something ... ;)

If the R1 is the same as the R2 then the transfer's awful. Nothing wrong with the print, but the transfer itself isn't up to today's standards - great big chunks of pixellation and mosquito noise all over the place. It's 6 years old, time for an overhaul!

I'll definitely get the new DVD, but probably not the Achiever's Gift Set.

The original R1 has much better picture quality than the R2.

I think that because the DVD is being released under a different Label, the first under Polygram, UN/Focus has decided to re-release this, if you check, the org. release also has a making of...which is just the Coen's sitting around talking about it, with some intreviews from the cast. I can only assume that this will be the same thing. The new feature here is the Jeff Bridges photos, I see no reason to pick this up if you have the other version, I also doubt there will ever be AC because the Coens have only done that with The Man Who Wasn't There.
