Tarantino announces his next project - a Mandarin kung-fu flick!

Total Film have reported, straight from the horse's mouth, that Tarantino's next film will not be Inglorious Bastards but rather "another kung fu that's gonna blow your asses off". Tarantino was quoted as saying:

"Inglorious Bastards, not yet, man. My next movie is gonna be another kung fu that's gonna blow your asses off. Everyone still thinks I'm doing Bastard's next, but before I do that I want to do something much smaller... The next movie will be in Mandarin! I enjoyed shooting all the Japanese stuff in Kill Bill, so much so that this whole film will be entirely in Mandarin. If you're not up to watching it with subtitles I really want to do a full-on dubbed version. Maybe shooting two Kill Bill movies has spoiled me but fuck it – sue me!"

No release date or other details have been set, although it has been rumoured that the film's shoot will kick off in a year's time.

Sounds too gimmick-y for my liking. And surely it should be in Cantonese not Mandarin?

I think the power has gone to QT's head.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 was lots of fun but it doesn't even come close to Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs.

"I enjoyed shooting all the Japanese stuff in Kill Bill, so much so that this whole film will be entirely in Mandarin."

That makes a lot of sense you enjoy Japanese so you film in Mandarin.

Mike surely that depends if he'll set it in Hong Kong.

An English dubbed version sounds awful, still it could be interesting. What's "Inglorious Bastards" about?

Brad - I meant that since Tarantino seems to want to emulate all those old kung fu movies, saying he'll have out of sync dubs, e.t.c., I'm surprised he doesn't want it in Cantonese, as that was what the large majority were filmed in.

My heart sank when I read this. I admire Tarantino's talent, but I wish he'd grow up. I was hoping he'd do something "much smaller" in the sense of being more restrained, after the self indulgent mess (with excellent bits) of Kill Bill. Maybe if he had a big flop the studios would rein him in a bit.

To be honest, I don't think the action scenes in Kill Bill were all that brilliantly directed. Maybe it'll work better this time, but I doubt he can do a straight martial arts film - he'll be too tempted to throw in every stupid idea that pops into his head.

Finally, maybe it's in Mandarin rather than Cantonese because he's going back to the 60s King Hu style movies?

Cantonese only rose to prominence in HK films during the late 70's and Tarantino has always struck me as more of a fan of the Shaw Bros films from the early to late 70's, most of which were Mandarin. Certainly he was influenced by a lot of older Shaw Bros titles throughout Kill Bill ie: Chinese Boxer, Five Fingers of Death, etc. I'd expect he'll be drawing inspiration from the likes of King Hu, Wang Yu, Chang Cheh and Lau Kar Leung.

What, like you did? :p I don't see what possible difference it makes anyway. We all know the word, and asterisking one letter (or even most of them) isn't going to alter matters.

Anyhoo, I must say that this news of Tarantino doing a kung-fu flick sounds pretty decent. I loved the two KILL BILL films and have no objections to seeing him return to similar territory. The idea of INGLORIOUS BASTARDS never sounded particularly appealling to me.

Bring it on, Quentin! :)

i.e. Stealing from. :)

Please folks, dont give this idiot anymore of your hard earned money. Spend it on some actual Shaw Brothers dvds instead of QT's cheap and shallow copies.

scary-crow, see the posting rules below:

"While minimal swearing in context is tolerated, excessive swearing will result in your comment being removed."

If you don't like those nasty, adult words then ship on out my friend, the rest of us can take it. :p

Oh, and I particularly liked the way that you duplicated the word that offended you too! Nice move! :D

I agree with Phil Q. Reservoir Dogs was as good as it gets--a perfect film. Really astonishing. Pulp Fiction did not have the tautness of RD but was nevertheless very entertaining and a great piece of work...By the time QT got to Kill Bill, cartoon-land had set in. Kind of interesting, given the fact that Rolling Thunder put out one of the great modern classics of Chinese film on DVD--Wong Kar-Wai's Chungking Express, which is phenomenal. Who knows? Maybe Tarantino, ultimately, will become an anime auteur. Gosh, I can't wait. Ulp.
